In two enchanting Chilean seaside towns, with cafes, fig trees, and magic birds, Agosin's band of teenagers become heroes, as they search for their friends who have disappeared during the brutal Pinochet years. Who could forget the scene when they first read out loud the names of students from their school who have disappeared, memorializing them. This book stands on its own, and I find it even more even more unforgettable than I lived on Butterfly Hill. I hope that teachers will add it to the curriculum along with Wiesel's Night, Danticat's Krik?Krak, and Erdrich's Tracks. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2021 )
